Randolph County Seat

About Wedowee, AL

Welcome to Wedowee, the county seat of Randolph County in east-central Alabama, a small town on the shores of Lake Wedowee — the clear-water reservoir on the Tallapoosa River.

Wedowee is a small town and the county seat of Randolph County, in the east-central part of Alabama near the Georgia state line. It sits in the rolling Piedmont foothills, on the shores of Lake Wedowee, a reservoir on the upper Tallapoosa River. The town's name reaches back to the Creek people who inhabited this region. "Wedowee" means "old water" in the Muscogean language, and the settlement was named for a Muscogee Creek chief. Settled in the early 1830s, Wedowee became the Randolph County seat in 1834, when circuit court was first held in Chief Wedowee's hut; a log building with a dirt floor served as the county's first courthouse. The town incorporated in 1836, though its charter lapsed and was not restored until 1901. Lake Wedowee is the defining feature of modern life here. Officially the R.L. Harris Reservoir, the lake was created when R.L. Harris Dam was completed in 1983, impounding the Tallapoosa River into a 9,870-acre body of water. Its clear water and largely protected, undeveloped shoreline have made it a favorite among anglers and boaters seeking a quieter alternative to Alabama's busier reservoirs, and it draws a steady flow of second-home buyers and retirees. Wedowee remains a small, quiet county seat of roughly 750 residents. The Randolph County School System is headquartered in town, and the county courthouse, local shops, and churches anchor daily life. Its location about ninety miles from Atlanta and within reach of Birmingham and Auburn gives residents a rural pace with regional access. Wedowee suits lake lovers, retirees, and families seeking an affordable, low-key community in the Alabama Piedmont.

City Guide

About Wedowee

Real Estate & Housing

Wedowee's housing reflects its dual role as county seat and lake community. In town, older single-family homes and small lots surround the courthouse square and school, while lakefront and lake-view properties line the reservoir's coves, many of them second homes, cabins, and newer retirement houses. Much of the shoreline is environmentally protected, which limits waterfront development and preserves the lake's character. Compared with Alabama's larger lake markets, Wedowee remains affordable, drawing buyers seeking water access without premium pricing.

Neighborhoods

Wedowee is organized around its courthouse and the commercial streets leading toward Lake Wedowee. The town proper is compact and walkable, while lake-oriented neighborhoods and subdivisions spread along the reservoir's northern coves and points, where many homes have private docks. Beyond the water, rural Randolph County land offers acreage and small farms. The town serves as the commercial and government center for a spread-out county population.

Lifestyle in Wedowee

Life in Wedowee revolves around the lake and the rhythms of a small county seat. Boating, fishing, and lakeside gatherings fill warm-weather weekends, and the lake's clear water and protected shoreline make it a favorite for quiet recreation. Community life centers on the courthouse, schools, churches, and seasonal events. Dining and shopping are modest, with residents traveling to Roanoke, Anniston, or Atlanta for larger retail. The pace is relaxed, and the area draws retirees and lake-oriented families.

Schools & Education

Wedowee is home to the Randolph County School System, the countywide public district headquartered in town, and to Randolph County High School. The district serves students across the county with elementary, middle, and high school campuses, keeping education locally accessible in this rural area. For higher education, Southern Union State Community College, Jacksonville State University, and Auburn University are within commuting distance, offering a range of college pathways.

Getting Around

Wedowee sits in east-central Alabama near the Georgia line, reached via U.S. Highway 431 and a network of state roads. Atlanta is about ninety miles to the east, and Birmingham, Anniston, and the Auburn-Opelika area are within regional driving range. Driving is essential, and commercial air service is reached through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport or Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The lake's boat ramps and marinas serve local and visiting boaters.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Wedowee is the recreation centerpiece, offering fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish, plus boating, kayaking, and swimming in clear water with a largely undeveloped shoreline. Public boat ramps and parks ring the reservoir, and the protected shoreline attracts ospreys, herons, and bald eagles. On land, the surrounding Piedmont countryside offers hunting and rural roadways for cycling. The Tallapoosa River below the dam and nearby state parks extend outdoor options.
